Made-to-Measure vs. Bespoke Suits: Understanding the Difference

When you’re after a suit with sharp style and a great fit, made-to-measure (MTM) and bespoke stand out over off-the-rack. Both give you something special, but they vary in how they’re made, customized, and handled. This guide breaks them down to help pick what’s best for your routine, build, and tastes.

What Is a Made-to-Measure Suit?

Made-to-measure suits start with a solid base pattern that’s tweaked to your sizes and choices. Your tailor adjusts it for a clean fit instead of building from zero. You pick fabric and details, then they take your measurements – noting posture, stance, and body quirks.

It’s quicker with fewer fittings, usually 4-6 weeks. Ours often wrap in about a month, great if you’re on a deadline.

You get plenty of options: fabrics, linings, lapels, buttons, pockets. It’s way better than ready-made. Our high-end MTM adds tweaks for posture, shoulders, neck, armholes, and more. For most folks, it nails a solid fit and feel without the wait or cost of full bespoke. MTM hits that sweet spot of custom, speed, and price.

What Is a Bespoke Suit?

Bespoke is the top tier of tailoring – a suit made from scratch just for you. Every part, from cut to fabric to tiny details, is picked and crafted with care.

It begins with a deep chat and measurements, catching dozens of points, posture details, and your style. Then a fresh pattern gets drafted, and a test piece (like a basted fit) is made. Early fittings let the tailor shape it on you, tweaking drape and balance live. Expect 2-3 sessions before it’s done.

Timeline’s longer – 12-16 weeks – for the skill involved. We aim for 12 weeks to hit our high standards.

With bespoke, you control it all: lapels, shoulders, sleeves, hand details like milanese loops. It’s more than a suit – it’s a custom piece built for you.

Made-to-Measure vs Bespoke: Key Differences at a Glance

  • Pattern & Fit: MTM tweaks a base pattern for good results on most builds. Bespoke drafts a new one, catching every curve and difference with expert touch.
  • Fittings & Process: MTM needs an initial fit and maybe one more. Bespoke has several to build and refine as it goes.
  • Customization: MTM gives solid choices from a lineup. Bespoke lets you go unlimited – every bit to your specs.
  • Fabric Selection: MTM has a strong range of quality options. Bespoke opens up more, like rare picks from mills such as Loro Piana or Holland & Sherry.
  • Time Frame: MTM ready in 4-6 weeks. Bespoke takes 12-16 weeks for the depth.
  • Cost: MTM easier on the wallet; bespoke a bigger spend for the craft. Our MTM two-piece starts at about half our bespoke price – varies by fabric/details.
  • Experience: MTM streamlined and guided. Bespoke hands-on and team effort for a unique result. Pick based on what fits your needs.
