Brix & Mortar is one of my favourite wedding venues in Vancouver because it sits somewhere in the middle of the formality scale.
It’s not a black-tie ballroom, and it’s not a rustic outdoor venue either.

Brown Shoes Are My First Choice
Unlike some of Vancouver’s more formal venues, Brix & Mortar works exceptionally well with brown leather shoes.
The warm tones throughout the venue naturally complement medium and dark brown leather, helping the entire outfit feel cohesive without looking overly styled.
I’d generally avoid anything too glossy. A beautifully finished calfskin or lightly polished leather feels much more in keeping with the character of the venue than an ultra-high shine.
Keep the Accessories Simple
Brix & Mortar already has plenty of visual interest.
The brick courtyard. The climbing ivy. The heritage architecture.
You don’t need your accessories competing for attention.
A crisp white shirt, a quality silk tie, and a white linen pocket square are often all you need. If the wedding is more relaxed, an open collar can work well too, provided it suits the dress code and the couple’s vision for the day.
Simple almost always wins here.
Dress for the Reception, Not Just the Ceremony
One thing I like about Brix & Mortar is that the atmosphere changes as the day goes on.
The ceremony feels elegant. Cocktail hour becomes relaxed. Dinner feels intimate. By the time the music starts and everyone is gathered in the courtyard, it almost feels like a dinner party among friends.
Your suit should transition through all of that just as comfortably.
If you feel like you’re wearing office clothes, you’ve missed the mark. If you feel like you’re wearing a tuxedo to a business dinner, you’ve probably gone too far the other way.

My Recommendation
If a groom asked me what I’d make specifically for a wedding at Brix & Mortar, I’d keep coming back to the same combination.
A well-tailored navy suit in a birdseye, pinhead, or sharkskin fabric. Brown leather shoes. Simple, classic accessories.
Nothing loud. Nothing trendy.
Just a suit that feels refined, comfortable, and completely at home in one of Vancouver’s most unique wedding venues.
Sometimes the best outfit isn’t the one that gets all the attention. It’s the one that simply feels like it belongs.
