Why Fairmont Pacific Rim Is the Perfect Place to Have a Little Fun with Black Tie

Every wedding venue has its own personality.

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is steeped in tradition. You almost feel obligated to wear a classic tuxedo because the building itself demands that level of formality.

Fairmont Pacific Rim is different.

It’s still one of Vancouver’s premier luxury wedding venues, but the atmosphere feels more contemporary. The architecture is modern, the art collection is bold, the cocktails are exceptional, and by the time the reception is in full swing, it feels more like an incredible dinner party than a formal gala.

That’s why I think this is one of the few venues where black tie doesn’t have to be conventional.

It just has to be done well.

Respect the Dress Code, Then Make It Your Own

Whenever I hear “black tie,” I still start with the classics.

A proper tuxedo. A formal shirt. A bow tie. Black trousers.

Those elements don’t change.
Where Fairmont Pacific Rim becomes interesting is how you interpret them.

Rather than reaching for a traditional black tuxedo every time, this is one of the few venues where I’d happily recommend a dinner jacket. A deep midnight blue, a rich forest green, or a beautiful burgundy can all feel perfectly at home here when paired with classic black tuxedo trousers. Tuxedo & Black Tie Guide

You’re still respecting black tie. You’re just adding a little personality.

Texture Will Always Beat Pattern

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to wear something a little different, I’d encourage you to think about texture rather than pattern.

A tonal jacquard. A beautiful velvet. A silk blend with subtle depth.

These fabrics don’t shout from across the room. Instead, they reveal themselves as people get closer, catching the light in different ways throughout the evening.

That’s the kind of luxury I appreciate. Not something loud. Something that rewards a second look.

It’s also one of the reasons I think Fairmont Pacific Rim suits these fabrics so well. The venue itself is layered with interesting materials, artwork, lighting, and finishes. Let the Details Show Your Personality

Traditional black tie doesn’t leave much room for experimentation, but this venue gives you a little more freedom.

Maybe it’s a beautiful pair of cufflinks. A watch you’ve been looking for an excuse to wear. Velvet slippers if they suit the tone of the evening. Even a textured bow tie instead of a plain satin one.

These aren’t dramatic changes, but together they make the outfit feel more personal without losing the elegance that black tie is known for.

That’s an important distinction. There’s a difference between dressing with personality and dressing for attention. Are You Wearing The Suit Or Is The Suit Wearing You?

The Best Outfit Should Feel Like the Venue

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that the best-dressed people usually look like they belong exactly where they are.

At Fairmont Pacific Rim, that doesn’t mean looking overly traditional.

It means looking polished, confident, and just a little more relaxed than you might at a grand historic ballroom.

It’s the sort of place where a beautifully tailored dinner jacket feels natural. Where interesting textures make sense. Where black tie doesn’t feel rigid. It feels effortless.

My Recommendation

If I were dressing a groom for a wedding at Fairmont Pacific Rim, I’d still embrace black tie.
I’d just have a little more fun with it.

A beautifully cut dinner jacket in a rich velvet or subtle tonal jacquard. Classic black tuxedo trousers. A quality bow tie. Thoughtful accessories.

Nothing excessive. Nothing gimmicky.

Just enough personality to complement one of Vancouver’s most stylish wedding venues.
